Pro Arte Quartet — Celebrating 100 Years! Did you know that the Pro Arte Quartet was one of the first string quartets ever to be recorded? Or that they’ve been on radio since the 1940s? Stop by the Music Library for a look at the Quartet’s amazing 80 years of recording and radio history. Then have a listen — many Pro Arte Quartet CDs may be checked out of the Music Library!
The latest book by Dr. Bill C. Malone, award winning author, dean of country music historians, and host of the WORT radio program “Back to the Country,” Music from the True Vine: Mike Seeger’s Life and Musical Journey, is now available and Mills Music Library has it in print and as an e-book.
Mike Seeger (1933–2009) spent more than fifty years documenting, performing, and popularizing American folk music. Mills Music Library has many recordings Seeger made as a performer — with his group The New Lost City Ramblers, solo efforts, like Old Time Country Music, and as a documenter, such as the groundbreaking bluegrass album Mountain Music Bluegrass Style. Seeger’s work can also be heard via streaming audio online in Smithsonian Global Sound — for example, his album True Vine. If you feel the urge to play and sing along, you can check out The New Lost City Ramblers Song Book and keep the music from the true vine blossoming.
