RISM Online

RISM (Répertoire International des Sources Musicales or International Inventory of Musical Sources) is an ongoing international project to document all known musical sources of manuscripts, printed music, theoretical works, and libretti. The inventory is divided into three groups: Series A, works devoted to a single composer; Series B, bibliographies or catalogs of specific sources (such as those devoted to writings on ancient Greek music theory, or lists of manuscripts in lute tablature); and Series C, directories to the research libraries that hold the musical sources.

The most massive section of the inventory concerns RISM Series A/II, musical manuscripts from 1600–1800. Originally published in microfiche, subsequent editions of the series were made available on CD-ROM. Currently, Series A/II is a searchable online database that lists 380,000 musical works by 18,000 composers and presents over half a million musical incipits to cited pieces. Entries include the composer's name, title, provenance, and holding library. The database is updated regularly with about 20,000 new records added annually and is available online with links from the UW Library's web site or directly from the Quick Links sidebar of the Mills Music Library's page at music.library.wisc.edu.
