Library Adds Bach and Beethoven Manuscripts
in Microform Edition

Two important new additions to the Musikhandschriften aus der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin—Preussischer Kulturbesitz microform set are now available in the Music Library.

The Beethoven Collection, regarded as the most important collection of that composer's autographs and transcriptions in the world, consists of approximately 15,000 autograph works, most of which are reproduced in color. These are supplemented by copies of the composer's works as well as the rare music manuscripts from Kraców. Included in the collection are autographs of Beethoven's Symphonies 4,5,7,8,9; Piano Concertos 1-3; the Missa Solemnis and Fidelio. An accompanying volume provides a comprehensive index to the edition. (Microfiche 43, Ref. ML136 B5 S743 2002).

A supplement to the Bach Collection, Die Bach-Sammlung aus dem Archiv der Sing-Akademie zu Berlin, includes reproductions of the manuscripts that were considered missing for decades following the invasion of Berlin by the Red Army. In 1999, musicologist Christoph Wolff discovered the missing collection in Kiev. It was returned to Berlin in 2001 and is now on deposit at the Staatsbibliothek.

The Sing-Akademie, founded in 1791, emerged as a significant center of music in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was here that the Bach revival began in earnest with Mendelssohn's production of the St. Matthew Passion.

The Sing-Akademie collection contains pieces by twelve composers, all members of the Bach family. Included are reproductions of manuscripts, autographs, copies, and printed music by J.S. Bach, W.F. Bach, and C.P.E. Bach, whose work is particularly well represented, and other 18th-century composers. Although many of the compositions are vocal and choral works, including passions and oratorios, there are also numerous chamber autographs by C.P.E. Bach. An index accompanies the collection.
