Volunteers Make a Difference
A Series Devoted to
Music Library Volunteers
Susan Goeres
"Busy" and "active"
are two terms that describe Music Library volunteer Susan Goeres.
For over a year Susan has been regularly donating her skills and
time to work with the Americana
Collection, one of the library's online sheet music databases.
When she is not at one of the library's computer keyboards entering
data into the database, she is at a piano keyboard serving as an
accompanist for area musicians, including the UW Opera with which
she has been affiliated for the past four years. In addition to
accompanying, Susan also freelances as a voice coach. With a degree
from Northwestern's School of Music and years of experience as a
school music teacher in Monroe, she is well suited for all the musical
roles she plays. And when she is not at the computer, or the piano,
or coaching a singer, you might find her hiking in the Rockies,
in Scotland, or even in the Swiss Alps. Then again, you might find
her at board meetings of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony.
Thanks, Sue for all the
help you have given to the Music Library. We appreciate it greatly
and are so pleased that you are able to fit us into your busy schedule!
Colin Cameron
Colin Cameron's fascination with film and entertainers
dates from his youth in the 1950s -- which explains his enthusiasm
for developing and installing the library's current exhibit, The
Collegiate Image 1900-1960: Icons and Images in Music Covers and
Memorabilia [see related article
this issue]. Colin drew upon a wealth of personal knowledge
in its preparation, but additional research revealed to him how
sheet music represented an "intimate link between all of the
arts" and how economics influenced the quality and style of
the sheets.
Recently retired from his position at College
of Agriculture and Life Science, Colin was previously Librarian
of the Somers Graduate Reading Room and Poverty Bibliographer. He
is an alumnus of the School of Library and Information Studies and
a Madison resident since 1960. He describes himself as one who greatly
appreciates the arts, and he is particularly fond of the mix of
them in Madison. Colin has been a volunteer in the Music Library
for three years, working most directly with the Popular
Sheet Music Collection.
Thank you, Colin, for your interest and support
of the Music Library and its collections!
