In Memorian: Robert Crane

Robert Crane (1919-2003)Staff at the Music Library were saddened to hear of the passing of Robert Crane, former faculty member in the School of Music, who died on Sunday, December 21, 2003 in Seattle at age 83. Prof. Crane was born on December 24, 1919.

Crane joined the School of Music in 1950 and served as professor of music theory and composition until his retirement in 1990. He held degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music, and he studied composition with Nadia Boulanger and Howard Hanson. As a composer, he was widely performed across the United States including performances by the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell and by the Seattle Symphony which premiered his Sinfonietta in 2001. He won the Lili Boulanger Memorial Award for composition in 1942 and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Alumni Award for composition in 1952. His music was published by Theodore Presser, Carl Fischer, and Concordia.
