Donors Enrich
Music Library's Collections

By Charles Schneider, Alinda Nelson, and
Steve Sundell

The collections of the Mills Music Library are regularly enhanced and strengthened through the generosity of donors. While all the donations are worthy of special mention, we want to take this opportunity to highlight a few of the splendid gifts that came to us recently and to provide a list of all the donors who contributed to the Music Library during 2003.

David Henige, Bibliographer for African Studies and Anthropology in the General Library System, delivered another installment in his ongoing series of compact disc donations. The latest is especially strong in vocal music of the sixteenth – eigthteenth centuries. Mr. Henige began donating vinyl sound recordings to the Music Library in the 1980s and the sum of all his donations now numbers well over 1200.

The retirement of Professor William Richardson from the School of Music prompted the donation of his vast library of solo and chamber repertoire for the trombone. This collection features, in particular, works of twentieth-century composers, a fair number of which were published only privately, making their presence in libraries a rarity. The donation in total constitutes nearly 800 scores and more than 500 sound recordings.

John Peter Gesinski, former staff accompanist in the Dance Department, presented more than 100 books and 2200 scores to the Music Library, principally a large collection of piano music, including solo and study materials, but also ballet rehearsal scores and opera vocal scores.

Since its inception several years ago, the library's Bunny Berigan Collection has attracted donations from some of the nation's premiere Berigan collectors, fans, and scholars, including Norm Krusinski, “Bunny’s Number One Fan.” Upon Krusinski's death in 2002, his massive Berigan collection was donated to the Mills Music Library by his children, Todd Krusinski and Norma Dobrochowski. Covering the period from about 1930 to 2000, the collection includes Berigan 78rpm and LP recordings, autographed photos, newspaper clippings, letters, jazz-related books, films, magazine articles, and recordings of other jazz performers such as Bix Beiderbecke, Bobby Hackett and Jack Teagarden.
