Current Library Exhibit

Joseph Philbrick Webster (1819-1875) was a prolific writer of sentimental, sacred, and patriotic songs; over four hundred were published during his IMAGE: Joseph Philbrick Webster (1819-1875) lifetime. Today, his most recognized composition is the gospel song, “In the Sweet By and By.” During the Civil War, the widespread appeal of his song “Lorena” made it hugely popular on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. The exhibit explores several facets of Webster’s music including his Civil War era compositions and “In the Sweet By and By.” Photographs of his home in Elkhorn and examples of his manuscripts are also displayed.

The exhibit continues through June.
