Resource Roundup
New on the UW Library’s Web Site
By Paul Friedman
Here is an overview of some electronic resources recently added to the UW Library's web site and a few new features found in WorldCat and Proquest Digital Dissertations.
New Features
WorldCat now allows requests for items in any format (including scores and recordings) through Library Express. Previously a separate login to Library Express and completion of a separate form was required. You can make your requests directly from WorldCat, through the “request Books only-library express” link and the pop-up window. The request window reiterates “books only” but you can, in fact, request items in any format.
Proquest Digital Dissertations now offers free PDF downloads for dissertations completed after 1996 from UW-Madison and the CIC institutions (Big Ten plus the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois-Chicago ). Searches can also be made for local research from Current Research @ UW-Madison and Current Research @ CIC Institutions, both linked from the "Dissertation Database Options" page (available from both the Journal and Reference Databases choices on the library's home page).
New Journal Resources
New journal resources are regularly added to the library's website. The easiest way to identify them is to select "Recent Additions to This Site" from the "What’s New" drop down box on the library's home page. These new resources, such as those listed below, might be worth a look as they provide indexing and often full-text access to journals not covered by the music periodical databases -- International Index to Music Periodicals, JSTOR, Music Index, RILM and RIPM.
Although American Humanities Index provides mainly bibliographic citations, there are still hundreds of music-related articles available here in full-text. This database is useful for topics including popular and folk music, music and literature, and music and women. A subject index is provided. The resource covers 1975 to present.
ChoiceReviews.online provides a full-text database of reviews published since 1988 in CHOICE: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries. Reviews can be searched by author or title, or browsed by subject or interdisciplinary topic.
Communication & Mass Media Complete (CMMC) provides full-text for more than 200 journals and is useful for topics involving the music industry, advertising, video, and media studies. Use the index to find topic headings. Dates and scope of coverage differ widely depending on the publication; some journals date back to the early 1900's.
Communication Abstracts offers citations and abstracts for 160 journals and also provides abstracts for papers and books. Music topics include popular music studies, ethnomusicology, cultural and media studies. Coverage is 1977 to present.
Contemporary Women's Issues offers full-text for more than 100 journals and citations for books, reports, and bibliographies covering the period from 1992 to the present. Searches can be limited by publication.
Sexual Diversity Studies: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Abstracts provides citations drawn from 5,000 periodicals and 13,000 books including both popular and scholarly presses. Music and dance topics are represented and subject headings are indexed. The resource covers primarily 1977 to present.
New in E-Books, E-Texts and Multimedia
Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) offers full-text and images of 18th century titles from United Kingdom and the British colonies. A wide variety of subjects includes some music topics. No indexing of subjects but a search for "music" in title yields 947 items.
New Reference Resource
Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan, based on the print encyclopedia, Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia, includes signed articles on aspects of Japanese culture and society. A quick search for music returns about 200 articles on musical genres, institutions, and performance.
As always, if you need any assistance with any of these databases, please ask for help at the Music Library's reference desk.
