New Exhibit in Mills:

Prelude to the Overture

Concert Venues in Historic Madison

Before Madison's new Overture Center was even a twinkle in anyone's eye, concerts and recitals had been held at a variety of interesting locations in the city. This exhibit highlights four of the more significant places where Madisonians heard music in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and notes some of the many local and visiting musicians who performed at them. Specifically, the venues are the Madison City Hall, the Fuller Opera House, the Armory (Red Gym), and Music Hall. Some of the many renowned musicians and theatrical personalities who performed here include Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Ole Bull, Theodore Thomas, Isadora Duncan, Richard Strauss, Mischa Elman, DeWolf Hopper, and Elsie Janis.
