Midwest Fiddlers

Photograph of two fiddlers from the 19th century

Featured in Exhibit

The current exhibit in the Mills Music Library looks at folk-fiddling traditions and practices in the Upper Midwest beginning in the 1890s. It was developed in conjunction with the Future of Folk conference that was held locally from April 14-23. Norwegian-American hardanger violin players and their kappleik (violin contests) are represented as well as the old time fiddle contests of the 1920s – 1930s. Wisconsin fiddlers Otto Rindlisbacher, Leizime Brusoe, Leonard Finseth and Aleksander Bogucki are also featured.

Many of the historic photos on display are drawn from the collection of musician and folklorist Robert Andresen (1937-1995). Although some of the photos portray unknown musicians, they all stem from the Upper Midwest and help illustrate how widespread and important the folk fiddler was in the rural life of this region.

The exhibit continues through July.
