Resource Update

xreferplus

xreferplus is an online library that offers access to over 160 reference books including encyclopedias, biographical resources, and dictionaries. Art, history, literature, and religion are among the broad range of subjects the tool embraces. Three music resources are available — The Faber Companion to 20 th Century Popular Music, The Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music, and The Harvard Dictionary of Music — and each title can be searched individually or collectively.

As valuable as these three tools can be to music research, you may not want to limit yourself to them alone. A search on the name Beethoven across all of xreferplus will produce color portraits of the composer from the Bridgeman Art Library Archive where you will also find many other music-related paintings. Another search will yield a biographical entry for "Willie Nelson" in the Columbia Encyclopedia. And if you are unsure of the pronunciation for the word "sostenuto," simply look it up in the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language where you can hear it pronounced online.

At the bottom of each entry, a citation is provided in three standard styles — American Psychological Association, the Modern Language Association, and the Chicago Style Manual — that can be easily copied and pasted into a bibliography.

Access to xreferplus is provided on the Quicklinks sidebar of the Mills Music Library's home page and it is also available through the "Reference: Encyclopedias, Dictionaries and more" section of the campus library web site (www.library.wisc.edu).

NewspaperARCHIVE Elite

A new resource entitled NewspaperARCHIVE Elite is now available to the UW community from Ebsco, the vendor that also provides Academic Search, American Humanities Index, Medline and other significant online resources.

NewspaperARCHIVE Elite features more than four hundred fully searchable newspapers from across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Years of coverage vary widely, but some newspapers dip back into the 1700s. The resource indexes a few major metropolitan newspapers like the Washington Post and the historic New York Herald, but its strength comes from its coverage of local and regional newspapers such as the Appleton Post-Crescent and the Syracuse Herald Journal. Newspapers from about a dozen Wisconsin cites are included. Pages are reproduced in PDF format so you can view each article exactly as it was published.

Among its many potential uses, NewspaperARCHIVE Elite is an excellent tool that can help track local music events or assist with your research of regional history and culture.
