Maureen and Robert Beck Support Pietsch Collection

Of the many interesting and significant donations received by the Music Library in 2004, one that stands out was made by Maureen and Robert Beck of Arlington Heights, Illinois. The donation consisted of two parts. The first was a large group of taped performances by composer Edna Frida Pietsch. As noted elsewhere in this issue* of the Jongleur, the library holds the Edna Frida Pietsch Collection. It consists of her manuscript scores that were previously donated by the Becks and other members of the composer's family. The recently donated recordings are a wonderful complement to that collection and include several of Pietsch's major efforts. Represented among them are performances of her orchestral works In Symphonic Mood and the Piano Concerto in A minor. There is also a recording of an all-Pietsch concert of chamber music that took place at the Charles Allis Art Library in Milwaukee in 1972. A recital sponsored by the MacDowell Club of Milwaukee captured a group of her songs and the String Quartet in D on tape.

The second part of the Beck's donation consisted of funding "for the upkeep, care and promotion of the Edna Frida Pietsch Collection." In part, this funding will be used to reformat and digitize the recordings which will ensure their long-term viability and make them readily accessible to library users. We are very appreciative and indebted to the Becks for their thoughtful and insightful contribution to the Music Library.
