Volunteers Make a Difference

Four highly capable individuals offered their time and skills as volunteers in service to the Music Library this past semester. With projects ranging from the preservation of sheet music to assisting with reference desk duties to supplying bibliographic information to a database, the Music Library's volunteers have undertaken some duties and projects which would not have been done without them. While there have been volunteers in the past, this is the first time four people have concurrently provided their helping hands, and their considerable contributions need to be recognized.

Genevieve Gersbach, Madison resident, School of Music graduate and vocalist, has worked to help preserve the library's nineteenth-century sheet music collection.

Howard Kanetzke, Madison resident, piano teacher, and former staff member at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, has been a Music Library volunteer for over two years. Howard has been entering data into the Wisconsin Sheet Music Database and also assists the library by spending many hours per month scouring the region for materials to add to the Wisconsin Music Archives.

Kaori Sakagami, a native of Japan, arrived in Madison this past fall and will soon accompany her husband to Purdue University. However, in this brief span of time Kaori has selflessy given many hours organizing and repairing the library's American Popular Sheet Music Collection.

Barbara Swan commutes one day per week from her home in Oshkosh in order to volunteer. Because of her strong educational background in music and library science, Barbara has provided needed help in staffing the reference desk and has organized and placed into the Wisconsin Music Archives Information File a mountain of materials which has accumulated over the past several years.
