Happy New Year
By Geri Laudati
1998 began for the Music Library at 7:20 am on 2 January with the arrival of the university movers who managed to clear the library with reasonably little damage. The recarpeting project went smoothly thanks to the concerted effort of library staff, university physical plant personnel, and American Audio, the company who maintains our facility equipment. Despite a few shaky moments, we reopened on schedule on 12 January. Although we did not get the funding to rewire as we had hoped, we have been assured that the wiring can be done without disruption at a later time. Your tolerance during the project was appreciated: we hope you used the time we were closed in other enjoyable pursuits.
Among the projects planned for the spring semester are a user survey scheduled for April 19-25. We urge you take a few minutes to tell us how we are doing and how we might better meet your needs.
In conjunction with the meeting of the Midwest Chapter of the American Musicological Society in April, we are planning several exhibits to highlight the collection and our activities. Materials from the Wisconsin Music Archives, the Tams-Witmark/Wisconsin Collection, the Recorded Sound Archives, to name a few, will be on display in the Library and in the Special Collection Department of Memorial Library. We also hope to have a few workstations and listening assignments from our audio streaming project ready to demonstrate at that time.
We look forward to seeing you often and extend to you our wishes for a great year.
