Madison boasts numerous attractions including the majestic State Capitol building, the new Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, five downtown museums, the Oscar Mayer Theater, Henry Vilas Zoo, a nationally acclaimed Farmers' Market, Olbrich Botanical Gardens and the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin, which is celebrating its Sesquicentennial this year.
Mills Music Library holds over 185,000 sound recordings, including 78 rpm records (100,000), LPs (67,000), as well as open reel tapes, cassettes, DATs and compact discs. The 78 rpm collection is one of the nation's finest repositories for the folk music traditions of European-Americans.
Among the presenters at this year's conference are ARSC members John Steiner and Allen Debus, who will speak on Paramount Records and Elsie Janis, respectively. The varied program also includes a discussion of discographical guidelines and standards; sessions on film, television, and radio music; and hispanic discography. Music in Wisconsin will be the subject of a few sessions, including a special evening program, Harry Partch in Madison.

The Friends of the UW Libraries will sponsor a sale of surplus recordings and a variety of print music materials from the Mills Music Library on Wednesday, 19 May, from noon until 7 p.m.
The opening reception will be held on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. in the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union's Tripp Commons. The reception will offer food, drink, and live entertainment by Brian Brueggen and the Mississippi Valley Dutchmen, one of Wisconsin's finest polka bands, which will lead the group in a variety of ethnic dances. We encourage you to stop in, pick up your registration packets, partake of the refreshments, and greet fellow members. First-time attendees will be introduced starting at this event. We encourage you to look for them and make them feel welcome.
On Thursday evening, Harry Partch at Madison will feature Warren Gilson, whose home recordings of Harry Partch preserved much of that composer's output from the mid-1940s while he was an artist-in-residence at the UW. Sonic Foundry, home of Sound Forge, will open the program with a presentation of their sound editing software.
Friday's events will be held on campus in Old Music Hall. Built in 1880, the Victorian Gothic building housed a two-story auditorium and a 75-seat library, lit only by large skylights over the reading area. Its tower clock provided the time standard for the community of Madison. In 1900, it was renovated to house the School of Music, which remained in the hall until 1968.
The State Historical Society of Wisconsin's main building is on the Madison campus. The Society contains internationally significant collections, including the Center for Film and Theater Research, the NBC Archives, the Sondheim collection, the Lunt Fontanne collection, and the Marc Blitzstein collection. Tours of the Center will be offered on Wednesday and Friday
The Mills Music Library has mounted an exhibit from its extensive holdings of Paramount Records and related labels. ARSC members are encouraged to drop in.
The Saturday evening banquet will offer a split entree of filet mignon and bronzed walleye accompanied by a salad, Wisconsin red potatoes, and fresh spring asparagus. The vegetarian entree is a wonderful mushroom strudel. Dessert will be Old World Apple Torte. Following the awards ceremony, Madison's own Lou and Peter Berryman will entertain. The Berrymans have achieved a classic level of comedic songwriting in the ranks of Tom Lehrer. The duo have recently released their eleventh CD, Some Kinda Funny, on Cornbelt Records.
