Time flies when you're having fun. It hardly seems
possible that the semester is already more than a
month old and we are still wondering where all that
fun was..
Music Library staff spent the January interim involved in the installation of new shelving, and you should soon reap the benefits of our finally having enough room to reshelve materials. The stacks were pretty scary; although we are quickly working to repair the damage, please do not hesitate to ask if you cannot find something.
Continuing in the arena of facilities, we expect to expand our reference area during spring break. We are removing a dozen listening carrels and adding shelving and study space. During the summer, we will get a compact shelving installation for the Audio Facility. Dennis Hill and Ed Van Gemert of the General Library System have worked tirelessly to augment my campus minor remodeling funds and the effort has paid off. What otherwise would have provided for only an addition to the stacks has instead given us reference, studio, and audio shelving as well.
Other defined activities that will consume our attention in the coming months include preparation of the self-study report in anticipation of the National Association of Schools of Music accreditation visit next year, and continued work on several of our digital projects and on the joint degree in music librarianship. Two of our student staff, Steve Henry and Paul Friedman, are currently enrolled in the program and preparing for careers in music librarianship. We're proud of their accomplishments-Steve received the Caddock Prize for the best music theory paper and Paul is the graduate student representative on the University Library Committee-and look forward to attracting others like them to the profession.
Mills' permanent staff, thankfully, has remained intact for an entire year now, and I continue to be amazed at the amount of work and number of special services we offer in relation to our peer institutions, several of which have permanent staff numbering three times or more that of ours. Our success relies in large part on the quality of our student staff and volunteers. We highlight our May graduates elsewhere in this issue and hope you will join us in thanking them for their service.
On behalf of Steve, Alinda, John, and myself, happy spring. As usual, we welcome your comments, suggestions, and visits.
