New Grove Jazz

The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz second edition was published in late 2001 and has been acquired by the Music Library (ML102 J3 N48 2001 Index Table). Enlarged to three volumes, the new edition updates and greatly expands the original 1988 publication. Moreover, in keeping with the publisher's current practice, the new edition will join its companion New Grove volumes online at grovemusic.com early this year. Links to grovemusic.com are available from the Mills Music Library's web page and MadCat.

The publisher has announced that the current edition contains 2750 new articles, 3000 revised articles, and 2250 new biographies, many of which document musicians who came to prominence during the past twenty years. In addition to the biographies, there are entries for venues, instruments, record labels, festivals, terms and styles. Like the updated New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, coverage and awareness of musical activity beyond the United States and Europe has increased, specifically of the Caribbean, South America and Japan for New Grove Jazz. Like all New Grove publications, articles are contributed by scholars and subject experts from around the world and include bibliographies.
