Music Library staff have recently developed a series of web guides to help patrons use library resources more effectively. Instructional topics along with a brief description of each page are noted below.
Finding Printed Music provides the patron with search strategies for locating music materials in MadCat. It also looks at print sources that help find classical music or popular songs in collections. The guide briefly shows how to locate internet sites which permit music to be downloaded as well as how to use Interlibrary Loan for materials not found on campus.
Finding Periodical Articles About Music discusses both electronic and print resources. The guide provides an overview of music periodical indexes including RILM Abstracts, Music Index, International Index to Music Periodicals, and several more.
A Chronological List of Periodical Indexes Containing Music Coverage surveys both general and music-specific indexes indicating the time period covered by the index. Both paper and online sources are examined.
Finding Dissertations About Music provides an overview of fifteen international sources that help identify dissertations on music topics. Several of the indexes are available online including Proquest Digital Dissertations (formerly Dissertation Abstracts) and Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology.
All of the guides are available at: http://www.library.wisc.edu/libraries/Music/services/millsbi/libinstr1.html.
Much of the work on these pages, including authoring and design, was done by Kirstin Dougan with help and oversight from Geri Laudati and Steve Sundell.
