  • Classical Music Library

    UW-Madison students, faculty and staff now have licensed access to Classical Music Library (Classical.com), a service that streams classical music over the internet on demand. Currently, there are over 20,000 tracks available for listening. Users can select music via a search feature or browse a variety of categories including composer, artist, conductor, and genre. Classical Music Library also provides composer biographies, program notes, a glossary of musical terms, and an image gallery. Streamed audio files are available free of charge or can be downloaded for a fee.

    NOTE: The Library currently has a limited subscription that allows for three simultaneous users only. Please be considerate of others and log off when you are not actively using the service.

  • NAXOS

    Founded in 1987, NAXOS (naxos.com), named after the Greek island, is one of the world's leading classical music record labels. Currently it has over 2500 titles which are all state-of-the-art digital recordings. NAXOS also distributes DVDs and DVD-Audio formats including Arthaus, BBC/Opus Arte DVDs, and TDK labels in most major markets. Users one may browse by title, artist, composer or series. In addition, there is a bi-monthly newsletter as well as record reviews available for viewing. Streamed audio files can be downloaded for a fee.

  • Smithsonian Global Sound

    Smithsonian Global Sound is a service that streams music over the internet on demand. It is produced in partnership with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, and is a virtual encyclopedia of the world's musical and aural traditions. The collection provides a large variety of online resources that support the creation, continuity, and preservation of diverse musical forms. Smithsonian Global Sound includes the published recordings owned by the non-profit Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label and the archival audio collections of the legendary Folkways Records, Cook, Dyer-Bennet, Fast Folk, Monitor, Paredon and other labels. It also includes music recorded around the African continent by Dr. Hugh Tracey for the International Library of African Music (ILAM) at Rhodes University as well as material collected by recordists on the South Asian subcontinent from the Archive Research Centre for Ethnomusicology (ARCE), sponsored by the American Institute for Indian Studies. Each person has the ability to create and save their own playlists. You will need to register at the site in order to do so.
