  • Academic Search (1984-)

    Academic Search is a full text database of more than 1230 journals, plus an indexing and abstracting database of approximately 3000 journals. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Christian Science Monitor are also indexed. Dates vary, but many of the full-text titles go back to 1990. A business directory is also included.

  • Articoli Italiani die Periodici Accademici (AIDA)

    AIDA indexes articles from over 1,000 Italian periodicals in the humanities and social sciences. The database can be searched by keyword, author, article or journal title, subject heading (in English), editor, publisher, and holding libraries (in Italy!).

  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index (1980-1989)

    Online as part of Web of Knowledge, this multidisciplinary database indexes articles, reviews, letters, notes, corrections, and editorials from 1,100 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals. The index is searchable by title keyword, author and citation. A citation search allows the researcher to search citation data (the footnotes to individual articles), taking a known paper and finding others which cite it or finding all papers citing work by a specific author.

  • Canadian Music Periodical Index (1890-)

    CMPI (Canadian Music Periodical Index) is an index to Canadian music periodical literature which provides bibliographic sources for information on all aspects of musical activity in Canada. Updated monthly, the database currently includes more than 25,000 entries indexed from 500 Canadian music journals, newsletters and magazines from the late nineteenth century to the present day.

  • Current Contents (1993-)

    Current Contents provides access to bibliographic information from scholarly research journals in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. The journals are indexed within days of publication, and include 7,500 international journals covering all disciplines. Complete bibliographic information is provided for each article, review, letter, note and editorial listed. Searchable abstracts are available for about 75% of the documents.

  • Dance Catalog (1450-to date)

    The Dance Catalog is the library catalog of the Dance Collection of the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts. It lists works, published and unpublished, about all forms of dance, from all cultures, in print and other media. It includes materials in many languages and serves as an index to international range of dance periodicals.

  • Eighteenth Century Collections Online

    The Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO), when completed, will include searchable full-text and images of every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in the United Kingdom and in the British colonies during the eighteenth century. Approximately 150,000 items are included. Subjects include: history, geography, social sciences, fine arts, medicine, science, technology, literature and language, law, and reference materials.

  • Humanities Full-Text (1984-)

    Humanities Full Text indexes over 400 English language periodicals. Its subject matter covers archaeology and classical studies, art, film, folklore, history, journalism, linguistics, literature, music, performing arts, philosophy, religion, and theology. Feature articles, interviews, obituaries, bibliographies, and reviews of plays, operas, ballets, dance, musicals, movies, television and radio are indexed. There are abstracts beginning with 1994. Full-text articles from 96 journals have been added beginning with 1996.

    Ingenta provides access to full text articles from many publishers in many disciplines. More than 800 of our electronic journal subscriptions at the University of Wisconsin - Madison Libraries are provided through ingenta. UW-Madison students,staff and faculty have access to ingenta's current awareness e-mail alerting services. Authorized users from this campus may register and select journals from which tables of contents will be e-mailed when available. Search results may be saved and emailed to the user.

  • International Index to Music Periodicals, Full Text Edition (1990-)

    IIMP draws its current contents from more than 400 music periodicals from twenty countries. It also indexes feature music articles and obituaries appearing in the New York Times and the Washington Post. IIMP covers both scholarly and popular articles about music. There is limited coverage back to 1874.

  • International Index to the Performing Arts (IIPA), Full Text (1864-)

    IIPA Full Text covers the arts and entertainment industry, including dance, film, television, drama,theater, musical theater, broadcasting, comedy, storytelling, opera, and more.It draws from more than 220 scholarly and popular performing arts periodicals,and indexes biographical profiles,conference papers, obituaries, interviews, discographies, reviews, events and more. Although the majority of titles begin in 1998, 46 important journals have been added retrospectively, some back to 1864.

  • International Medieval Bibliography

    The International Medieval Bibliography is the major index to medieval studies (c. 400-1500). It includes citations to articles in approximately 4500 journals and "miscellany" volumes (conference proceedings, essay collections and Festschriften).

  • ITER: Gateway to the Renaissance (400-1700 AD)

    A bibliography of approximately 225,000 records from the complete runs of more than 300 scholarly journal titles pertaining to the Renaissance (1300-1700) and Middle Ages (400-1299). Also under construction is a bibliography of books (monographs) covering the same time period. Music coverage includes more than 1100 titles.

  • JSTOR

    JSTOR is a full-text database of more than 100 journals in the humanities and sciences. JSTOR contains the complete back runs of thirty-two scholarly journals dedicated to research and theory in the field of music, and includes journals published in the US, Great Britain, Netherlands, Croatia, Hungary, Germany and France.

  • LEXIS/NEXIS Academic Universe Web (Dates vary)

    LEXIS/NEXIS Academic Universe is composed of roughly 5,000legal, news, reference, and business sources, most full text.It includes international and U.S. newspapers, magazines, wire services, newsletters, trade journals, company and industry analyst reports, and broadcast transcripts. Of particular interest are the New York Times since June 1980; The Wisconsin State Journal since 1992; The Capital Times since 1992; and The Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel since September 1995. Polls (from the Roper Center for Public Opinion) and the World Almanac are included in the Reference search category.

    This index includes data from more than 800 international music periodicals. Topics concerned with every aspect of the classical and popular world of music are thoroughly categorized and organized according to the framework of an internal Subject List which includes both Subject and Geographic headings. Covering all styles and genres of music, The Music Index duly cites book reviews, obituaries, new periodicals, and news and articles about music, musicians, and the music industry.

  • MIML - Musical Instruction and Musical Learning, 1450-1650

    This bibliography is designed to cover the secondary literature on how music was taught and learned during the two-century period 1450 to 1650, elucidating aspects such as the institutions, traditions, and practices of musical pedagogy in the Early Modern Period.

  • Newspaper ARCHIVE Elite

    Newspaper ARCHIVE Elite includes fully searchable newspaper pages from more than 400 cities and towns-from The Washington Post to the Stevens Point Gazette (see full title list). An excellent tool to research genealogy, history, culture and newsworthy events in a local context. Years of coverage vary, but some newspapers go back as far as the 1700s and include titles from the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom.

  • PCI: Periodicals Contents Index (Late 18th Century - 1993)

    The PCI database contains citations for more than 3,500 social science and humanities journals published in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, and Germany. There are occasional abstracts, primarily consisting of contents notes.

  • ProQuest Digital Dissertations (1861-)

    A listing of doctoral dissertations in all subject areas completed at U. S. accredited institutions, with some masters theses and foreign dissertations. Listings are from 1861 to the present, with abstracts for dissertations since 1980. Full text (PDF files) of UW-Madison dissertations from 1997 forward are available to UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff free of charge. Orders for complete dissertations may be placed online, but check MadCat first to see if they are owned on campus. Free interlibrary loan may also be a possibility.

  • ProQuest Historical Newspapers: New York Times (1851-1999)

    Updated annually, includes full-text and full-image articles in PDF format. Complete page images can be viewed and issues can be browsed page by page. More recent years are available through Proquest Newspapers or Lexis/Nexis databases.

  • ProQuest Research Library (1988-)

    ProQuest Research Library indexes more than 2,000 periodicals, and provides the full text of nearly 1,000 of them. It has a mix of general interest and academic journals that cover the arts, business, education, health, humanities, psychology, sciences, and the social sciences. Dates vary, but many full-text journals go back to 1988.

    The Times (London) Digital Archive includes page facsimiles of all the issues of the London Times published from 1785-1985. You can search by keyword and date, and can limit your search to sections such as: Advertising, Pictures, People, News, Editorials. You can browse the entire paper by date. You can e-mail or print your results.

    Ulrich's Periodicals Directory, or ulrichsweb.com (formerly Ulrich's Plus), provides detailed information on serials published throughout the world. It covers all subjects, and includes publications that are published regularly or irregularly and are circulated free of charge or by paid subscription. It also includes reviews of serials from Magazines for Libraries and Library Journal.

    The Web of Knowledge is a combination of three databases: Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index. It indexes more than 8,000 peer-reviewed journals, providing complete bibliographic data and author abstracts. Every item of significance is listed: articles, reviews, letters,notes, corrections, and editorials. In addition to access by author,title, and institution, it is also possible to search by cited authors and to find articles sharing one or more cited reference.
