The University of Wisconsin–Madison Library Catalog, MadCat, provides access to books, scores, recordings, periodicals, and other materials available on the UW-Madison campus.
Some important things to remember when searching for materials about women in music:
- Subject Field
- Use the subject field to search by official library terms used to describe materials about women in music.

- Search by a combination of terms, not necessarily found in an assigned subject heading, to broaden the possibility of finding an occurrence of those words in the catalog record.

- Search by individual names of women composers or musicians using the name field, or search by the contents notes using the individual's name.
- Type of format
- Limit your search by format to find only recordings, scores, books, or videos.
- Before you search: Use the set more limits option (lower right in the pink bar), then scroll through the list of available types of formats to set limits.
- After you search: Use the limit results button option (upper right of search results), then scroll through the list of available types of formats to set limits.
- Publisher
- Searching by the publisher name field can be useful when looking for works published by companies specializing in music by women.
