Andresen Collection "Northland Hoedown"
Tape Log

Return to Robert Andresen Collection Main Page

By Gretchen Dresen

The following collection of 94 radio programs titled Northland Hoedown was broadcast by host Robert Andresen over radio station KUMD, the University of Minnesota Duluth station at 103.3 FM. The radio series originally aired in the spring of 1983 and was broadcast weekly at 1:30 p.m. Fridays with the same program repeated the following Tuesday at 7 p.m. Andresen’s program was also broadcast on stations WOJB in Reserve, Wisconsin, KAXE in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and WDAY in Fargo, North Dakota.
Each segment is approximately thirty minutes in duration and has a congenial introduction by rich-voiced Roy Wirtzfeld. The general theme of each program is in some way associated with folk music as defined in Andresen’s 1978 article for Minnesota Monthly titled, “Traditional Music: The Real Story of Ethnic Music and How It Evolved in Minnesota and Wisconsin.” In the article he states that folk music is “music that is an integral part of grassroots culture, shared and understood by both performers and listeners.” Each program centers on some aspect of performance, style, origin, or development of specific music by a wide variety of performers. Regretfully, 14 additional programs are missing from the collection.
