Hilmar Luckhardt Collection

(1934–1980)

Return to Papers and Manuscripts

Hilmar Luckhardt (1913–1984)Hilmar Luckhardt (1913–1984: photograph from the collections of the University of Wisconsin Archives.) taught composition and theory at the Univeristy of Wisconsin from 1939 to 1979. He composed over 50 works including original scores to educational and documentary films. His works have been performed by the Wingra Woodwind Quintet, the Pro Arte String Quartet, the University of Wisconsin Brass Quintet, and the University of Wisconsin Bands. Luckhardt referred to himself as a “neo-post-romantic composer.” Several of his compositions are designated “anti-new music music” because he felt that contemporary music has “a lot of sound and fury signifying little or nothing.” Although Luckhardt was involved in all varieties and styles of music, he was “more interested in writing music for the great mass of people than for my professional colleagues. It is not esoteric music, composed so only a student of music with a lot of study can understand it; neither is it directed to the grandstand.”

This is a list of the maunscript, published compostions, and recordings of Hilmar Luckhardt found in the Wisconsin Music Archives. The list, arranged by medium, was compiled by William Luckhardt in the mid-1980s and updated in 1999.
