Webster, a composer and performer of popular music, was born in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1819. He studied with Lowell Mason and was active musically in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. In 1851 he moved to Madison, Indiana followed by Chicago (1855), Racine, Wisconsin (1856), and finally Elkhorn, Wisconsin (1859), where he died in 1874. His most notable compositions are “Lorena” and the “Sweet By and By.”

It is unknown when the papers were acquired by the Mills Music Library. Additional papers are located in the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.

- Several handwritten and typed lists of compositions; 1 draft letter.
- Dance and other instrumental music; it is unknown whether Webster and/or others composed this music.
- Miscellaneous compositions; reasonably complete pieces or sections; some attributed to other composers.
- Five small bound volumes including exercises, a volume of sacred music with Latin texts, and part books for dance (?) music.
